It seems like daily we’re hearing about horror. But what can we individually do about it?
What good can really be done to outweigh the tragic?
If I live in a land of privilege and opportunity and I have all that I need and I am not in want, even if I have little in comparison to others, then I absolutely have a responsibility to keep going. It’s my duty to do much good with what I’ve been given. For that reason, I can’t let fear stop me. I can’t let the bigness of the problem stop me.
What a shame it would be for me to stay focused on my problems and the reasons why “I might not succeed”.
Nonsense. I’ve already succeeded.
And given my place in this world, my very safe and secure place – I have a duty to pour my heart and soul into my work. The more I learn to meditate and be still, the more I deeply understand that the only great passion in life is to serve. Everyday I see more clearly the stark truth of my situation here in the country of America. I have influence. I have agency. I have anything at my finger tips even if I only have a few hundred dollars in my bank account, I am still vastly more wealthy and taken care of than most of the world and, most likely, even many within my own back yard.
My influence isn’t about me.
It’s never been about that. My job is not to worry about success. Because if I’m being honest, in those still and quiet moments when I allow my mind to have silence and peace I can hear my inner voice telling me that I will always be taken care of. My voice, she says to me, “You’re job is to be you and to glorify God.”
As that voice says to me, so I say to you:
Your only job is to be you. Be you so boldly and loudly and authentically that you meet God. And by meeting God you develop a deep, deep well that only He can dig. From that well you will serve the world with your whole heart.
That is the point for all of us. All of us must become activated agents in our own little corners of the world touching those to our right and those to our left; those in front of us and those behind us.
For it is by changing ourselves that we can change the world.
