25% of of people abandon their New Year’s resolutions after one week.
I am in the 25%.
How about you?
Sometimes we meet our goals and sometimes we don’t. That’s OK. As Michael Hyatt likes to say, “Failure is feedback”. Nothing more. I texted a pal this morning about how I have a love/hate relationship with the New Year. She texted back, “It’s just another day!”
Ok, so it’s just another day, but we can really escape what wrapping up 365 days and starting another 365 means.
In a maddening season of self-improvement, our hopeful selves can get slammed with dozens of ideas and offers of how to improve, re-do, lose, and change.
I’ve been getting tons of emails from gurus galore who offer transformative and introspective ways to get your goals set for the year. It’s all so tempting. It’s tempting even for me, especially for me if we’re being honest, (I love a good guru) to think someone else has the answer to help us figure our lives out.
The truth is that you have a lot of untapped power. Chances are if you silenced your life for about 20 minutes you would be shocked at what kind of genius pours forth. But the super secret million dollar tip is: YOU HAVE TO GET STILL AND ALONE.
And then you have to listen.
Honest Questions For Starting a New Year
- Who do you want to become?
- Who do you want to serve?
- What do you want this year’s legacy to be?
- How can you serve others where you need serving?
Beautiful Questions From My Mentor
- What is most important to you and why?
- Are your head and your heart both on board?
- Do you have a true success partner to keep you accountable and on track?
When we create our resolutions from passion vs. fear or obligation, we can use pull energy vs. push energy or willpower, which we know never lasts. There is no need to be anything but Gentle with yourself!

Great post! I’ve been pondering and writing about similar thoughts lately… I want my decisions and actions to be based in love rather than fear in this new year. And I definitely want to spend more time getting still. Thanks for the inspiration!
