The other morning after my trip to Nashville, I woke up with little songs buzzing around in my mind.
At least I thought they were songs. Turns out they were poems after all. It seems like taking a day trip to a happening city was just thing I needed to get my creative embers stoking.
This poem is, in part, inspired by my journey as of late. And when I say journey, what I really mean by that is my internal journey. I’ll be honest about the fact that I’ve been working on my self a lot through mentorship, the 12 steps, reading, meditation, and prayer.
What I’m approaching is the thought that it might actually be OK for me to be me. A huge part of me, if not all of me, is pure blooded art.
This process of discovery is about reconnecting to my deepest roots in art, writing, photography, philosophy, and fashion. This poem is kind of about that. It’s about my hearts longing to be fully engrossed in making and doing…to be fully expressed.
About two years ago I was able to visit BON in Tucson, Arizona. It was the highlight of my trip. BON is a mother/daughter owned and loved boutique with the most beautiful styling I’ve ever seen. They frequently have their pal, Kate Edmonson, photograph looks for the website. The tumbleweed is a character that makes regular appearances in her photos. I find it inspiring…
My heart is a tumbleweed. It leads and turns and flies and bleeds. Rambling from town, on the outskirts now, dusted and trampled, it pains for what it seeks.
My heart is a tumbleweed lost and lonely, thorny and aimless, tired and ageless. Find me home for my tumbling weedy heart. Give me some rest, put me top a shelf. Ease my distress, would you?
Steal a picture or soak me in water. Paint my boney branches different colors. Can you grant me a fresh start for my tumbleweed heart?
Thanks for reading my poem. What do you think? Do you have a tumbleweed heart? Are you reconnecting to long lost parts of yourself? What would it take for you to bring some of those things forward and put them out in the open? I want to hear about it in the comments below.
